Millions of Americans will soon head to the polls to cast ballots in local and statewide political races, in the first general election of President Donald Trump’s second term in the White House.

A University of California Berkeley/IGS Poll suggests 60% of likely California voters support Proposition 50, while 38% oppose it. The breakdown was highly partisan, with 93% of Democrats saying they would choose "yes" and 91% of Republicans choosing "no."

But the most telling results will come from gubernatorial elections in New Jersey and Virginia, two states that voted similarly in 2024 but may now be drifting in opposite directions. The results there will offer clues about the political weather before the midterms in November 2026.

Former President Obama went out to campaign for the Democratic gubernatorial candidates in New Jersey and Virginia. Also, a closely-watched mayoral election in New York City will be decided tomorrow.

The first polls will close Tuesday night in Virginia, where the state will elect a new governor, one of several major races throughout the country.
