The 3I/ATLAS interstellar comet’s size and physical properties are being investigated by astronomers around the world. Named after the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) survey that first detected it, 3I/ATLAS includes the “I” designation to signify its interstellar origin, indicating that it came from beyond our solar system.
I/ATLAS is set to reach its closest point to the Sun on Wednesday (October 29), at around 11:47 Universal Time (UT). The comet will approach to about 1.36 astronomical units from the Sun. Follow our live blog for updates.
